How to Descale a Keurig and Enjoy Full Cups of Coffee Again

The horrible signs of your Keurig scaling are unmistakable: setting slowly poured, slowly pouring when you really needed that cup, odor accumulation, and half coffee.

Scaling occurs when hard submerged underwater - water containing many minerals adheres to the interior of Keurig and gradually clogs the pipe (the same can happen to your plumbing). At a more sophisticated time, more advanced Keurigs will ask you, but if you use regular tap water it is recommended to do it every 6 months. When time comes, how to unscale Keurig is as follows.

Note: This is especially about scaling. If you would like to clean the dirty Keurig thoroughly, please check our guide on how to do it as well.

Step 1: Prepare your Keurig

Cleaning of Keurig

Empty Keurig, clean up the sink nearby and secure enough space. Pour the remaining water in the reservoir into the drain port and confirm that no K cup remains in the beer brewery. Find a big mug for use in drainage and make sure that no one will need their coffee fix for the next few hours.

Step 2: Prepare scale remover

Now you need an acidic descaler to move through your brewery so that it can break up the calcium deposits. Both strengths and weaknesses have two general scaling options.

Keurig descaling solution: Keurig sells its own scale removal solution. It can be purchased for about $ 7 to $ 15 for a single use. It is a simple option that does not require much effort and removes the scale by all accounts. But when you read Keurig's own product page (with only a 3 star score) and Amazon's reviews, you will notice that the solution tends to smell citrus. It will affect the taste of your coffee over the next few days.

White vinegar: White vinegar is very cheap, it gets available soon and, in terms of scale, it works wonderfully. You will need at least some cups for a good cleansing, which means you may have to go out and buy some more special for this project. Also, is Vinegar means that your kitchen and rest rooms may smell the vinegar for a while.

If you are using the Keurig solution, we recommend emptying the entire bottle in the tank and then filling the rest with clean water. In the case of white vinegar, I would like to fill the reservoir with half vinegar and half of the water.

Step 3: Move your descaler through Keurig

Set your Keurig in an ordinary, full of coffee - if you have a thermos bottle near you, you can go bigger, but mugs usually work best. (Again, make sure there is no K cup inside.) Run the scale removal solution and wait for the cup to fill up.

If your Keurig has bad scale problems, it may not be able to fill the full with even the right settings. It's okay, the solution takes a while to work. Fill the cup after the cup and keep pouring them into the sewer. When using white vinegar solution, the room is truly I start to smell like vinegar, but please continue until hanging there and the reservoir is empty.

Finally, you can pour the water more smoothly and fill the cup a little more easily. If there are no improvements at all, just in case, we recommend filling the reservoir with more solutions and repeating the whole process.

Step 4: Rinse Keurig with fresh water

Keurig for a while, leave it for about 30 minutes (still with the power on). This gives the acid time to decompose the remaining scale in the brewery. Well, carefully clean the reservoir and wipe the inside to remove all traces of vinegar / solution. When finished, fill the container with clean fresh water. It is time to wash out all scale removal solutions from the system.

Once again, fill the Keurig, add a cup of water, put a cup in the brewery, discard each one. Once the reservoir is empty, fill it again and continue with the same thing. It will take at least two complete reservoirs of water to wash out your Keurig, so prepare to get rid of lots of water.

At this point, you may want to run a taste test to see if you can taste any of the descalers remaining in the water. Do not be afraid to flush it a few more times as the flash can never be too exhaustive.

In general, scales are more easily formed from tap water. That's why Keurig recommends that you fill the beer with filtered water and bottled water to minimize scale problems. Bottled water is an expensive option, but if the scale is a continuing problem for you, you may want to consider buying a simple water filter to use just for your Keurig not.
