Report: Amazon and GM May Invest in Rivian Electric Pickup Company

General Motors and Amazon may invest $ 1 billion to $ 2 billion to acquire minority interests in the US all-electric truck startup company Rivian, Reuters said.

According to the same sources, there is a possibility that the agreement will not be reached in the investment negotiations, but if the agreement is reached, there is a possibility of announcing this month.

Neither Amazon nor Rivian comment on the possibility of investment. GM did not mention the possibility of investment, but in an e-mail statement to Reuters, "We will praise Rivian's contribution to zero emissions and the future of the all-electric future."

Established in 2009 by CEO RJ. Scaringe, Rivian plans to start production and sales of the R1T electric pickup truck in the second half of 2020. Rivian announced R1T at the Los Angeles Auto Show in 2018.

If Amazon and GM are investing in Rivian, two deep pocket partners should increase the opportunity to introduce EV manufacturer's planned cars into production, it is a massive effort for all automakers and a new company It is full of challenges for.

Rivian has three battery packs for R1T, 105 kilowatt-hours (rated 402 horsepower and 413 lb-ft of torque), 135-kWh (rated 745 horsepower and 826 lb-ft of torque) and 180- kWh (rated 700 horsepower, torque 826 pounds Feet). Depending on the installed battery pack, the pickup can have a super car class acceleration or excellent range.

For example, the best performance is the 135 kWh battery pack, according to Rivian's argument, R1T can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 3.0 seconds. The heavier 180 kWh battery setting will be 60 mph in 3.2 seconds and the lightest but not the most powerful 105 kWh battery pack will take 4.9 seconds to reach 60 mph.

To compare the acceleration of Rivian R1T, Mustang Bullit in 2019, the fastest current production model except Shelby GT 350, can hit 60 miles per hour with 4.1 seconds with agile clutch work. Ford evaluates the 2020 Mustang GT 500 with a number from 0 to 60 mph in the range of "half 3 seconds", and it is a dual clutch sub 100 msec - shift - transmission of the GT 500. However, in the all electrified world, even 3.0 acceleration of RIT is slower than Tesla Model S P100D in Ludicrous + mode.

So, RiT promises to be faster, it is important, but within the scope of an electric car there is a problem as much or more than how fast you can reach the next signal. With a 180 kWh battery pack, Rivian insists that R1T can run up to 400 miles with one charge. Rivian evaluates battery pack versions of 105-kWh and 135-kWh at distances of 230 miles and 300 miles, respectively.

With a requested maximum traction capacity of 11,000 pounds, an all-wheel drive thanks to the electric motors of each wheel, and an adjustable air suspension, the RIT will become a multipurpose beast. On the inside, all four passengers are sitting on a bucket seat (two people in front and behind).

In addition to keeping in the pickup box at the back of the truck, make sure that the trunk (front trunk) hides baggage and other objects hidden. Problems can arise because the battery pack and motor are all under the track 'skateboarding' chassis.

Rivian's plan includes the development of R1T to level 3 automatic operation (automatic driving on expressway under certain conditions), and addition of R1S which is a SUV model to the line.
