Nvidia RTX 2080 Ti Review

What is Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 Ti?

Normally, with the new generation of graphics cards, the clock speed is only improving, so gamers can raise the resolution and see smoother performance at higher frame rates. Nvidia RTX 2080 Ti and other new Turing graphics cards, however, have greater ambitions. They adopt a completely new technology that could revolutionize the visual of video games.

Here we will take up a headline where ray tracing and deep learning super sampling (DLSS) provides a more realistic lighting effect, the latter rendering high quality images more efficiently using artificial intelligence. Three new graphics cards from Nvidia can all perform such technology, but RTX 2080 Ti boasts all the best specs. If you want the ultimate performance for ray tracing and DLSS, RTX 2080 Ti is definitely the best consumer card to buy.

Naturally, RTX 2080 Ti is also the best consumer graphics card to achieve universal performance. The Pascal card - former Nvidia generation - could run the game at 4K, but the new Nvidia RTX 2080 Ti can run some of the most notorious request games at 60 fps with Ultra HD. This means that you are not just able to play something like Shadow of Tomb Raider With the jaw dropping detail, but it will also ensure that it runs smoothly next to judder and stuttering.

Since publishing my review for the first time in October last year, the update of the Nvidia Game Ready driver after that was rolled out, until the first person shooter game appears Battlefield 5 And Departure from Metro It now supports ray tracing and DLSS. In the future more titles will be added to support these functions, but for the moment it is these two games that raise the ray tracing flag.

But without considering it, there is no doubt that RTX 2080 Ti is the most powerful consumer graphics card available for purchase right now. RTX 2080 Ti is the best choice if you are using an old rig and are considering moving to AAA games of 4K or more. However, until the game utilizing the next generation's features is on the market, it is a bit strict selling for those already using Nvidia's 10 series cards.

Nvidia RTX 2080 Ti - specification and technology

Nvidia RTX 2080 Ti is a GeForce GPU with 18.9 billion transistors built in.

Nvidia's new card, which has adopted the new Turing architecture, is not only built to be more efficient but also has new features not seen in the previous iterations of Nvidia's graphics card. All new Turing cards are equipped with Turing SM, Tensor Core and RT Core, and the specifications of each component are different for three Turing GPUs.

Nvidia RTX 2080 Ti

The new dual fan design of RTX 2080 Ti not only makes it look nice, it also helps to prevent heating problems

RTX 2080 Ti is a Tensor Core engine boasting the 114 TFLOPS AI engine and an RT core capable of producing 10 Giga Ray / second ray tracing acceleration boasting the best specs of these cards. It is a number that triggers migraine but what you really need to know is that these specs mean that the RTX 2080 Ti card is the best option for the new ray tracing and DLSS graphics technology To do that.

Turing cards also had some architectural coordination with improved bandwidth compared to Pascal's predecessor. Although the memory bandwidth of GTX 1080 Ti is 484 GB / s, the RTX 2080 Ti has made a dramatic improvement to 616 GB / s. There is also 11 GB of 14 Gbps GDDR 6 RAM here. This is a major reason why 2080 Ti can reach the speed required for 4K games.

Your main ally CUDA core for improving performance is also showing a remarkable increase. The GTX 1080 Ti has a 3584 CUDA core, but the RTX 2080 Ti has an impressive record of 4352. As expected, there is also an increase in boost clock speed from 1582 MHz to 1635 MHz.

The increase from GTX 1080 Ti is only 10 W and the power consumption of RTX 2080 Ti is 260 W.

Nvidia RTX 2080 Ti

Thanks to DisplayPort, RTX 2080 Ti is an ideal graphics card for virtual reality with HTC Vive Pro compatibility.

On the other hand, if you have Nvidia NVLink, SLI will again be supported by Nvidia's latest graphics card, but game support is limited at the time of writing.

Regarding the port, RTX 2080 Ti has everything you need to guarantee in the future, such as HDMI, DisplayPort, USB Type C and so on. These are particularly important for virtual reality, as well as the DisplayPort required for HTC Vive Pro and USB Type. -C It is promoted as a future connectivity option of the future VR headset.

Nvidia RTX 2080 Ti - Ray tracing

Nvidia RTX 2080 The most exciting feature that Ti probably has is ray tracing is a rendering technique that realistically simulates the scene and its object lighting.

Ray tracing is not really a new technology - it has been used in movies for many years. Nvidia, however, is the first company to succeed in using ray tracing in real time, and that is that "real time" part it is obviously necessary for video games.

Nvidia RTX 2080 Ti Ray Tracing

In Star Wars demonstration, we introduced the possibility of real-time ray tracing and demonstrated new photophysics with reflective armor.

The lighting effect to change this game not only makes the environment more realistic but also produces more real shadows and reflections. The glossy Stormtrooper armor was made to look more convincing with a dazzling reflection and shiny finish, so this was shown at Nvidia's Star Wars demo.

Meanwhile, DLSS allows gamers to enjoy ray tracing without having to suffer from a large frame rate reduction. In a recent patch that supports both Battlefield 5 and Metro Exodus, we were able to test both functions and see the impact they had on performance. This is my way.

Activating DirectX Ray Tracing (DXR) with Battlefield 5, I noticed a subtle but noticeable improvement in visuals, especially in the snow-covered landscape of the Story Mission Nordlys. For example, on the surface of a frozen lake, reflections of mountains, buildings, trees are seen, the scene has a more immersive feeling, a dynamic and realistic feeling.

Even in indoors away from reflective ice and shining campfire, ray tracing helps improve the environment. Since reflection is displayed on the glass door of the cabinet, it helps to find a secret enemy. The photo frame hanging on the wall also benefited from this technology as the sun's rays reflected from the glass making it look remarkably realistic.

All these visual effects are subtle, but certainly it will help to further refine the already beautiful world. The only problem? Enabling DXR greatly improves the frame rate as technology becomes very powerful and requires more effort to render.

Activating DXR while playing Battlefield 5 in Full HD greatly decreased from 130 fps to 80 fps. This is a drastic decrease. However, this is still a sufficient frame to achieve very smooth performance. If you want to play at 4K, Alien Aurora is a bigger problem because you can only manage 45fps when setting DXR to Ultra and playing Battlefield 5 despite enormous power.

DXR OFFSet DXR to Ultra
Battlefield V (Full HD)130 fps80 fps
Battlefield V (4K)60 fps45 fps

However, this frame rate reduction was initially worried at first but, as a result of the release of DLSS, the problem may already have been resolved. Nvidia GeForce Game Ready 418.91 Driver update is finally released and frame rate performance has been improved by supporting more efficient execution of the GPU. See the DLSS section below for the exact number of how DLSS improved performance.

Nvidia RTX 2080 Ti - Game that confirmed using ray tracing

Like Battlefield V, Nvidia has compiled a decent game list to support RTX 2080 Ti's ray tracing capability. These games include Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Metro Exodus. Due to the fact that such highly-known developers have already participated, there is a possibility that more developers will appear in the future. The full list of compatible titles is as follows:

  • Asset Corsa

  • Atomic Heart

  • Battlefield V

  • Control

  • Enrollee

  • MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries

  • Departure from Metro

  • Shadow of Tomb Raider

  • Justice

  • JX 3

  • Project DH

In 2019, it is expected that more games will appear in this list. Bioware's Anthem is rumored to appear next to Battlefield 5 and Metro Exodus.

Nvidia RTX 2080 Ti - Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS)

Probably not as sexy as ray tracing, DLSS is still an important function for the Turing graphics card, a remarkable upgrade of supersampling and multisample anti-aliasing (MSAA).

By using DLSS, Nvidia RTX 2080 Ti can use artificial intelligence to create images of the same quality as those created with traditional rendering methods. So what's the point? Indeed, this method actually saves the performance power of the GPU, helps the GPU work more efficiently, and brings a smooth video.

DLSS is even more important given the performance impact of ray tracing. Although I benchmarked Metro Exodus with or without DLSS, ray tracing was effective in finding out how much influence Nvidia's new technology had on performance. The result was very impressive.

If ray tracing is set to "high" and the resolution is set to 4K, the frame rate will average 35 fps. For a first-person shooter, this is not an ideal performance. However, with DLSS enabled, the frame rate suddenly jumped to 55 fps. This is an amazing improvement of 20 fps, which brings really big difference.

DLSS offDLSS on
Metro departure (4K + ray tracing)35 fps55 fps

Since we could only do the DLSS benchmark test once, we can not regard these results as final. Nonetheless, these initial results are truly promising, and there is the possibility of completely wiping out concerns that ray tracing is a performance sponge.

Game confirming that Nvidia RTX 2080 Ti - DLSS will be installed

As with ray tracing, the only big concern with DLSS is that there are no games currently supporting this technology. Currently, only Battlefield 5 and Metro Exodus have enabled Dattle. There are many more games confirmed to have DLSS in the future. The complete ones are as follows:

If other games confirm DLSS support, be sure to update this review.

Nvidia RTX 2080 Ti - Performance and Benchmark

Test methodology

I benchmarked the test rig of Nvidia RTX 2080 Ti on Trusted Reviews. It is designed to match the specifications of standard gaming computers. The main components are as follows.

We intend to update the benchmark results soon using Intel Core i9-9900K which is also used for testing RTX 2080 and RTX 2070. However, please note that there is little difference in frame rate in the first test. When upgrading from From Intel Core i7-8700K to i9-9900K. The above settings are ideal for making the best use of RTX 2080 Ti.

Graphic card for comparison

If you are investing in the Nvidia RTX 2080 Ti GPU, there is a good chance of upgrading from the Pascal generation graphics card. With that in mind, I decided to compare the benchmark scores with GTX 1080 Ti and GTX 1080 to discover the scope of the upgrade.

In the near future Nvidia's RTX 2080 benchmark results will also be added so you can see which of the new Turing cards is best for you.

These are all official Founders Edition graphics cards manufactured by Nvidia and should therefore serve as a baseline for third party alternatives.

Nvidia RTX 2080 Ti vs. GTX 1080 Ti and GTX 1080 - Benchmark

Shadow of Tomb Raider

Shadow of the Tomb Raider is one of the latest high-profile games to be released, one of the most technically demanding titles. With the granular environment and realistic lighting and weather effects it is difficult to run this Lara Croft entry with optimal settings even for the most powerful GPU.

GTX 2080 Ti is the first consumer graphics card I have seen that the graphic setting is the maximum and that Shadow of the Tomb Raider can run at 4 K at 60 frames per second. On average, the average FPS benchmark of GTX 2080 Ti was shy of the desired 57 fps, but instead it was 57 fps. It is 30% better than what GTX 1080 Ti achieved. People sticking to the frame rate will be satisfied with the super smooth performance here.

However, in full HD, the difference between 2080 Ti and 1080 Ti is only 6%, the difference in frame rate is not so big. Given that these benchmarks are 110 fps and 104 fps high respectively, it is rarely to notice the difference in visual fidelity. So, if you have not invested in the 4K monitor yet, RTX 2080 Ti is not worth the cost here.

Ghost Recon Wild Land

It was Ghost Recon Wildlands that put the most pressure on RTX 2080 in our test. Given the large open world it has to offer, it is hardly surprising. The fact that RTX 2080 Ti can handle it at more than 30 fps at 4 K, as there are few technically demanding games as well as Wild Land, this graphics card will let you know which other 4 K title you throw that way Should also be addressed.

Unfortunately, RTX 2080 Ti missed 60 fps in Ultra HD. The best setting for graphics is because you could run Wildlands with an average of 46 fps. It's not ashamed, as GTX 1080 Ti could only hit 37 fps and GTX 1080 30 fps, but I have to admit that I wanted some more progress.

Again, there is only a 3% increase from GTX 1080 Ti to RTX 2080 Ti for full HD (1920 × 1080). Still, I will further strengthen the case that upgrading to Turing GPU has little meaning. Play with HD.

Dirt rally

The above two titles are two of the most demanding graphics games, but I tested the GTX 2080 with a somewhat older game and decided not to misuse the GPU like a slap happy jockey. Since it was released in 2015, the dart rally seems a perfect choice and is a good standard for current video games.

Patterns were able to fit well, the biggest performance difference between RTX 2080 Ti and other graphics cards was the 4K test. The average frame rate of RTX 2080 Ti was 117 fps, which was improved by 24% from the score of GTX 1080 Ti and significantly improved by 52% from GTX 1080.

You know what happens to our full HD test. Yes, there was not so much difference between graphic card benchmarks. Furthermore, since all of these numbers exceed 130 fps, human eye may not be able to see any further improvement in frame rate.

Singular point ash (DirectX 12 mode)

The last game I tested was Ashes of the Singularity. Given that it is a strategy game with many on-screen actions, I thought it would be a good title for challenging RTX 2080 Ti.

Hitting a frame rate sweet spot with a benchmark score of 65 fps in Ultra HD, the RTX 2080 Ti saw a 23% improvement in performance compared to the GTX 1080 Ti and a 41% improvement on the GTX 1080 Ti.

As so many actions occur at once, these very smooth frame rates will be very useful for 4K large real-time strategy games.

3D Mark

Fire Strike Ultra
2080 Titanium8047
1080 Ti6646
10805080

I quit the test and ran the 3D Mark's Fire Strike Ultra benchmark program. This software is very useful for exporting benchmark scores. Benchmark scores can be compared with various hardware settings for their popular usage.

RTX 2080 Ti produced a very impressive 8047. This is much higher than the benchmark scores of 1080 Ti and 1080, 6646 and 5080 respectively. RTX 2080 Ti is the most powerful graphics card I have tested so far.

virtual reality

I have not had the opportunity to test the RTX 2080 Ti with Oculus Rift, HTC Vive or HTC Vive Pro yet. If you have the opportunity, please be sure to update this review.

Nvidia RTX 2080 Ti - Conclusion of performance

RTX 2080 Ti is the most powerful graphics card I have tested so far - the benchmark score proves that. Extra £ 430 you need to spend on RTX 2080 Ti on GTX 1080 Ti gives you an average 25% frame boost.

In other words, GPU of Pascal generation before Nvidia struggled to run 4K game with graphic setting of maximum 60 fps, but RTX 2080 Ti hit in all the games I tested. If you want the most smooth experience while playing games on Ultra HD, then RTX 2080 Ti is the card to go.

Nvidia RTX 2080 Ti

Real time ray tracing will be launched on November 20th with Battlefield V.

However, if you're sticking to HD games, it's overkill to buy RTX 2080 Ti. The difference in performance between RTX 2080 Ti and GTX 1080 Ti when the resolution is set to 1920 x 1080 is hardly anxious. GTX 1060 and GTX 1050 Ti also can play most games at this resolution.

Nvidia RTX 2080 Ti - Overclocking, heat, and power consumption

Since Nvidia RTX 2080 Ti is a powerful technology, please make sure there is a PSU that can handle its power supply. While running the Fire Strike Ultra benchmark software without overclocking, the peak power of the GPU was 392 W.

This is a big leap from 361 W of GTX 1080 Ti. If you are considering upgrading, please make sure you have the right hardware. If you are installing a more sophisticated processor, we recommend that you reconfirm the power consumption of the rig so that it does not exceed that value.

Nvidia RTX 2080 Ti

Nvidia's RTX 2080 Ti is the best graphics card that can be used with precious games of 60 fps in the 4K standard.

Do you want to squeeze all the power from Nvidia RTX 2080 Ti? Then you probably want to overclock a thing.

By running the Unigine Heaven benchmark program in the Ultra HD loop, we were able to achieve 220 MHz GPU overclocking within an hour. When trying to overclock the GPU further, Unigine began to crash. Strangely, I did not encounter the problem of not making the memory overclocking so high, potentially further increasing it, but it was limited by time constraints.

After overclocking the RTX 2080 Ti I was able to achieve a clock speed of up to 2000 MHz and achieve a frame rate boost of 9 fps. It was very impressive. Even more noteworthy, the temperature rarely exceeded 75Thanks to the dual fan system, we did not have to worry about the test equipment flames up. Indeed, the graphics card was very quiet in both the benchmark test and the overclocking test.

Need to purchase Nvidia RTX 2080 Ti?

If money is rarely a problem and you are imagining the most powerful graphics cards you can use, 2080 Ti is the card to go. For the most intensive games available, the RTX 2080 Ti is seeing a performance improvement that is sufficient to justify the upgrade.

Nvidia's flagship GPU should be able to perform most of the video game at 4 fc at 60 fps. It has all the graphics settings cranked to the maximum. By adding ray tracing and DLSS technology, prospects are also proven.

HD game is another story. If you just want a basic game at 1080p, cheaper cards are available that can do the job. However, unless DXR is enabled, how about maniacs that spend a lot of time on graphics cards while using HD monitors?

verdict

Although RTX 2080 Ti is very expensive, it is lacking in the future with 60 fps at 4 K.
